National Geographic Traveller - Indian Ocean map

I just finished this map of the Indian Ocean as a double page spread for National Geographic Traveller magazine. You can see some close up details here. There were definitely more plot points on this map than any I have dealt with before! It was difficult to strike the balance between geographical accuracy and readability but I am happy with how this came out.

John Baldessari - A Brief History

One of the best things about teaching is when one of your students shows you something you'd not seen before.

The New York Times - 'Lives'

I just realised I haven't posted any of these for months - here's a selection of new illustrations I have done for the 'Lives' column in The New York Times Magazine which I illustrate each week.

I drew this lion from Trafalgar Square recently for a project which didn't go ahead. But he's still a nice lion.

Frieze Nintendo Family Space 2012

I produced these illustrations for the interior wall at the Frieze Art Fair London 2012 Family Space, sponsored by Nintendo.

The illustrations are based on the idea of pattern and repeat taken from Frieze artist Thomas Bayrle, and the idea that elements from the pattern can be used in different ways by experimenting with basic compositional choices, such as scale, colour and rotation.

You can see all my work for Frieze from 2009-2012 in one place in my portfolio.

Frieze Art Fair Family Guide 2012

Once again I have produced the illustration for the Frieze Art Fair London Family Guide 2012 in collaboration with designers Europa with content written by ReachOut RCA

The illustrations for 2012 on the 5-8 year old side of the activity guide are based on Grizedale Arts Frieze Project where a number of artists, community groups and eccentrics will be manning stalls around the circumference of the Pavillion they have constructed at the fair, selling their home produce and ideas for alternative eating.

The illustrations on the side for 9-12 year olds are based on the Frieze Project by DIS Magazine, a post-Internet lifestyle magazine about art, fashion and commerce.

Visit Frieze London this weekend 13 & 14 October 2012 in Regents Park to pick up a copy of the guide.

Looper dir. by Rian Johnson

The only film about time-travel you'll ever need to make you believe in time-travel.

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

In 2009, my good friend Thomas Ormonde came to visit me while I was living in Berlin. We spent all of our spare €€€ in photobooths, and attempted to be the first people in history to turn one into a giant street-sized Periscope, using mirror tiles bought from the Eisenwarengeschäft and sellotaped (safely) onto the back of our bikes (I wish I had photos of this).

While our lighting calculations somewhat let us down on this ambition, we also made a stop frame animation, using elements from illustrations we made pinned to Tom's face. Good days!
